NEW STORE OFFERS VEGAN BAKING OPTIONS
By David Hutter
Torrington- Caitlin Blake wanted to provide
a food store that caters to health-conscious people, so she opened Cait's
Kitchen.
Located at 634 Main Street, Cait's Kitchen
sells pre-packaged baking mixes that are marketed toward vegetarians and
vegans. It opened for business in late September.
Blake studied nutrition at the Institute for
Integrative Nutrition in New York City. She is a vegetarian and a certified
health counselor. If a patron asks for advice pertaining to health and
fitness, she will give it, she said.
"As a health counselor, I can help with a
myriad of concerns." At the same time, she is careful not to give
unsolicited advice.
Business has been brisk at the store so far,
she said.
"It has actually been very exciting," she
said. "People are concerned about living a healthy lifestyle and are buying
a lot of baking mixes."
She expects her business to see an increase
in customers with the approach of the holiday season.
So far, Blake has not hired any employees.
Instead, she is spending a lot of time working at Cait's Kitchen. The most
popular item at the store is a product called "It's Not Just Oatmeal!", she
said.
Cait's Kitchen is open Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Wednesday
and Sunday.
